This station on the Grand Trunk Railroad, in Woodhull Township, was founded on land bought in 1846 by John P. Shaft, for whom it was named. he platted the village and built its first hotel. Newton Bacon, dry goods merchant, became the first post- master of Shaftsburgh on Jan. 19, 1880, with the spelling changed to Shaftsburg on May 25, 1891 [Ellis. PO Archives]
Personal note: For some reason this town is the destination for one of my favorite daily drives. Not too far from home and a relaxing route on very lightly-traveled roads.
