General Information:

From souvenir record album:

The Cadillac & Lake City Railway had its be ginning as part of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad. On March 26, 1921 the Grand Rapids & Indiana was leased to, and became a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system. Its trackage included what became known as the Missaukee Branch of the Pennsylvania, running from Missaukee Junction (north of Cadillac), to Lake City and Falmouth, Michigan. The branch was operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad until June, 1964.

Early in 1964 the Cadillac & Lake City Railway Company was formed. The entire twenty three miles of right of way, grounds, and trackage of the Missaukee Branch, was purchased. In June of 1964 the railroad opened for business as a common carrier of freight and passengers between Missaukee Junction, Lake City, and Falmouth. The Cadillac & Lake City Railway Company has in creased its freight traffic steadily since 1964, moving agricultural and forest products between Falmouth and Lake City and the now Penn-Central mainline at Missaukee Junction.

The railroad right of way is used for passenger runs during the summer, and passes through farm land, beautiful wooded areas, and along scenic lakes between Lake City and Missaukee Junction (north of Cadillac). A ride on this line behind a steam locomotive will provide long memories of railroad travel as it was in another time. The Cadillac & Lake City locomotive Number TWO, heard in this recording, was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in December of 1912 for the Saginaw Timber Company.

Saginaw Timber Company was purchased by the Polson Logging Company, which later was acquired by Rayonier, Inc., of Haquiem, Washington. Rayonier retired the seventy-ton 2-8-2 saturated steam locomotive from service in 1962. In 1964, the Cadillac & Lake City Railway Company purchased the oil-burning locomotive from Rayonier, and moved it from Washington State to Lake City, Michigan. The locomotive was shopped and reflued in February, 1965. After a complete running-gear overhaul in the spring of 1968, the Number TWO was used in the making of a movie in Chicago from May through July. Once back home on the Cadillac & Lake City, she has seen continuous summer service from August, 1968.
